43 Mill St West
Elora, ON N0B 1S0
The cinema’s humble roots go back to 1974 when two students began projecting 8mm films onto the exterior wall of the old Commercial Hotel behind Le Cafe Flora. Back then, many residents believed both the cinema and the cafe to be “dangerous places for Elora’s vulnerable youth. Rumours persisted that the entire street had become a hangout for idle, long-haired hippies experimenting with drugs, free sex and radical politics.” But as time passed the little movie house along with its long haired supporters, earned their place in the community and the Gorge Cinema became an important beacon of art and culture in the village of Elora, and beyond.
